How We Can Fix Air Pollution
Posted on 17th July 2018 by FM Mechanical Ltd
As humans continue to cross new boundaries with their fantastic advancements across a number of globally-impactful industries, it is important not to ignore the globally-impactful consequences that unfortunately arise as a result. In this article, we will be covering what air pollution is, why it’s bad for us, and what we as a species can do about it.
What Is Air Pollution?
Although not easily visible, air pollution is all around us and is one of the biggest public health issues the world faces today. Air pollution is the effect of toxic compounds and gasses infiltrating the air as a result of potent chemical reactions.
Breathing in this polluted air can not only have detrimental effects on human health but also has a lasting impact on wildlife and the ecosystem. The ozone layer, which protects the Earth from the Sun’s harmful rays, is slowly being eroded away by the polluted air, leading to significant risks to the Earth’s climate.
What Are The Causes Of Air Pollution?
There are many natural causes for contaminated air, such as volcanic eruptions and wind erosion. However, it is human beings and their actions that are without a doubt the primary source of global air pollution.
Huge advancements in the way we live our lives have contributed to the ever-growing demand for power and electricity. The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, allow us to supplement this power but also inflict a number of harmful byproducts such as carbon dioxide and methane into the air as a result. On top of this, cars and other modes of transport we use daily rely on chemical reactions responsible for releasing significant amounts of nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide.
How Can We Fix Air Pollution?
Air pollution may seem a complex issue, but the root of the problem is simple to understand. If we reduce our power consumption, we reduce the need to create power and thereby reduce the number of toxic chemicals released into the air.
As a result, there are many small changes an individual can make in their everyday life that can make an important difference. The fundamental key is to conserve energy. This means to remember to turn the light switch off when it’s no longer necessary, make the effort to use energy-efficient appliances such as light-bulbs and radiators and try to wash clothes and plates by hand instead of relying on power-hungry washing machines and dishwashers.
Furthermore, carpooling is a good way to help reduce the number of cars on the road, especially if they’re all travelling to the same place. Or better yet, cycling and walking are great alternatives to driving where possible – and provide a healthy dose of daily exercise as well.
What Is The Future?
As a society, it is paramount that leaders understand the importance of investing in more sustainable ways to elicit energy. Many advancements have already been made with the conception of wind farms and solar panels, allowing us to harness energy from the wind and sun. However, this technology is still in its infancy and it is vital to make sure continued research and development is prioritised in order to provide a safer and more stable future.
With millions of barrels of fossil fuels burned and millions of cars travelling the road on a daily basis, it is easy to feel powerless to change. However, it is important to understand that individual effort which can feel insignificant provide one of the necessary brushstrokes that comprise the larger picture. As a society we must work as a collective to educate others on the importance of renewable energy and and inspire others to take part in a global project. Even the smallest of changes can end up making a huge impact on human life and the future of our planet.
