Recommended Thermostat Settings Throughout The Year
Posted on 29th June 2019 by FM Mechanical Ltd
Every year, homeowners ponder what the ideal temperature is for their home. Whether it be the height of summer or the midst of winter, it’s always a good idea to know what the perfect house temperature is. Not only will this save energy, but it will also save you money on gas bills.
Ideal Thermostat Settings for Summer
Daytime temperature (at home): 20°C – 25°C
It would be completely ineffective to set the thermostat temperature to lower than normal just to cool the house down quicker. Instead, it’s better to set it to a temperature that is steady and comfortable.
Temperature while you’re away from home: 18°C – 22°C
Although this may seem counter productive, turning the thermostat up will keep the heat and humidity under control while you’re away from home. Turning the system off completely won’t do any harm either, however, your home could become vulnerable to naturally overheating in the midst of summer.
Most energy-saving temperature: 25°C
According to Energy Star, a government-backed Environmental Protection Agency in the USA, claims that making use of a programmable thermostats will significantly reduce cooling costs. This temperature can be pre-set to guarantee optimum energy savings.
Ideal Thermostat Setting for Winter
Daytime temperature (at home): 20°C – 22°C
It would be better to put on an extra layer if your house feels slightly chilly. This will save you money on your energy bills. You could even run a whole-house humidifier in a bid to decrease evaporation throughout your home.
Temperature while you’re away from home: 14°C – 18°C
You don’t want to come back to a cold house, but then you don’t want to waste money heating a house which is empty. Setting the thermostat at these temperatures will save you money and reduce the likelihood of damp forming, especially if the house will stand empty for a considerable amount of time. You could even pre-programme the thermostat, enabling the heating to come on at certain times throughout the day.
Most energy-saving temperature: 16°C – 21°C
During the winter months, you could save up to 5% in heating costs by lowering the thermostat temperature by just 1°C. Save money and the environment and add an extra layer if you’re feeling cold.
Ideal Thermostat Settings for All Seasons
Temperature for sleeping: 19°C
Mild drops in temperature can induce sleep as our body temperature drops slightly anyway when we’re ready to fall asleep.
Temperature for a baby: 18°C – 23°C
You can turn the thermostat up or down depending on how hot or cold your baby is. You can check their temperature by feeling their ears or chest.
Temperature for the elderly: 18°C – 21°C
This is important to prevent the elderly from catching cold-related illnesses, especially during the winter months.
Temperature for pets: 17°C – 25°C
Although most animals have natural coping mechanisms when it comes to their body temperatures, pets such as tropical fish or amphibians don’t, and so will need to be kept in warmer conditions.
Temperature for houseplants: 16°C – 24°C
Staying within these temperatures can be hard, especially if you have plants of different varieties. If you’re finding it difficult to maintain these temperatures, but don’t want your plants to wither, ensure the temperature of your house doesn’t go below 10°C or above 29°C.
